LASEK Vision Correction
The Procedure
Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK) is an innovative procedure virtually identical to PRK that has improved recovery time and safety profile. PRK was FDA-approved over 20 years ago and involves removing the epithelial layer of the cornea and then utilizing the excimer laser to reshape the cornea. The LASEK procedure is similar to PRK, except that instead of scraping or lasering the epithelial layer away, it is preserved as a replaceable flap.

A cool beam excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea to correct the refractive error. The epithelial flap is then replaced without sutures and a bandage contact lens is placed over the cornea to secure the flap. Most patients do not experience any discomfort during the 15-minute procedure. After 4 days, most patients achieve driving vision and no longer experience any of the mild discomfort felt during the initial recovery period.
